As we head toward the painting season, homeowners are starting to notice some repairs around the exterior of their house that need to be completed. Rotten trim and damaged siding are the most common. SurePro Painting provides repair services to fix these problems, as well as other additional services.

Nearly every exterior painting job has some kind of repair needed, and rotten trim and siding are the most common we deal with. Persistent leaks and runoff causes wood to age rapidly, along with exposure to the sun. Large temperature swings also accelerate the process. We see it most often in trim around doors and windows, especially areas that are constantly damp or shaded.

Rotten wood on your house is not just unsightly; it will also cause your home to age more rapidly. Holes and gaps will develop that allow moisture and bugs to penetrate the wood, further accelerating the process. Area with minor damage can sometimes be patched and painted over, but more serious areas should be removed and replaced.

Make sure your home’s exterior is checked for any rotten wood or siding before beginning a paint job.

Fascia and Roof Trim

Rotten trim - fascia

The fascia and roof trim are other areas that are prone to rot. The fascia is the trim that faces outward, directly beneath the roof-line. Runoff from the roof will drip down onto the fascia. Some areas that might be missing the metal flashing will be prone to rot… the corners of the fascia is a location where this tends to happen often.

Again, any rotten or deteriorating areas should be addressed rather than just painted over. Any contributing factors should also be addressed, such as missing or damaged metal flashing.

Gaps and Holes

In addition to the rotten trim, gaps or holes are another of the most common issues that we see when painting a house exterior. Any area where water or pests can enter your home should be taken care of immediately.

Whether spraying or rolling your home’s exterior, we always fill and caulk all the gaps we come across. These generally are present where the trim meets the siding, at the corners of the house, or around penetrations (such as a gas line entrance). Some larger gaps might require additional labor to close up, but caulking is generally a pretty standard step in the prepping process.

Holes are a little less common, sometimes caused by a tree limb or a pest like a raccoon or squirrel. We have seen holes in virtually ever location you can think of on a home. Perhaps the most common that we see is a hole in the siding of a chimney. Oftentimes, they are located at the base of were the chimney meets the roof. Since they are high up and usually out of sight, many homeowners don’t even realize there is a problem until a family of raccoons move into the attic. Trust us from personal experience… you don’t want that!
