WHY POPCORN CEILINGS?
From the 1950’s to the 1990’s “popcorn” ceilings were installed in most new constructions. Also known as the acoustic ceiling, the idea was that the rough ceiling texture would cut down on noise.
It also covered any imperfections in the installed sheetrock ceiling tape joints. It gradually fell out of fashion in the 1980’s as its popularity dwindled and it seems that no one wants it in their homes anymore.
REMOVING POPCORN IS A MESSY PROCESS
STEP 1: PROTECT YOUR HOME
Popcorn removal is best done in a vacant home. If you can’t remove all the items, then all the floors, furnishings, and other items must be masked and covered to protect from the mess.

STEP 2: SCRAPE THE CEILINGS
The existing popcorn texture is painstakingly scraped off the ceilings. often using water to help loosen it. Special care must be taken to avoid creating deep gouges or divots in the sheetrock beneath.
STEP 3: FLOAT AND SAND
The newly exposed tape seams and any divots or gouges from the scraping process are floated with drywall compound, then all the floated areas are sanded to create a smooth surface.

STEP 4: APPLYING TEXTURE
The new texture is sprayed onto the ceilings, hiding any imperfections and creating a consistent texture. For smooth finishes, an extra coat of drywall compound is applied and then sanded.
STEP 5: PRIMING & PAINTING
The ceilings are primed with an oil-based sealing primer to block out any staining from seeping through and to prepare the surface for the final topcoat. We always use high-quality latex topcoats with primer included for the best coverage.

STEP 6: CLEANUP
Fixtures and AC vents are re-installed, and all the tape, plastic and masking paper is removed and disposed of offsite, leaving you with a gorgeous home, and NO MORE POPCORN!
